When Bill and Vonette Bright first launched Campus Crusade for Christ as a campus ministry in 1951, the underlying concept was to "win the campus today and change the world tomorrow." More than 50 years later, the mission remains the same.

Today, cru is a network of vibrant, growing movements on 1,029 campuses in the United States and beyond. Proven and diverse outreach strategies expose millions of students to the gospel each year. Over the past five years, more than 37,900 students have made a decision to follow Christ.

Back in the late '60s, the Lord put it on the heart of several staff members from the University of Kentucky to start Cru at WKU.  They began traveling to Bowling Green from Lexington to launch the ministry, and the Lord blessed their efforts.  In 1969, Cru was chartered as an official WKU student organization, with Mike Garrigan as their first student leader.  Eventually the first Cru campus director, Dave Schrone, arrived.  Over the years, the ministry has grown from a handful of students to well over 150 hundred, currently.  Dr. Thomas Weakley, a Western alum, came to WKU as campus director in 1985 and is still giving leadership to the movement today.  In 2008, Ben McGuire took on the role of Director of Student Ministries.
